The Treaty of Greenville had turned over most of Ohio to settlement. The problem with the treaty was the same as most other treaties like it. The Indian peoples were supposed to observe it, but settlers usually ignored it. Frontier whites routinely crossed into Indian land to hunt and to settle. Any Indian who ventured near a squatter settlement risked being shot. In 1801, Harrison observed that frontiersman “consider the murder of Indians in the highest degree meritorious” (Edmunds “Justice” 48).
